Act on recommendations of the Cohen Commission on restoring sockeye salmon stocks in the Fraser River.
What success looks like
The new Wild Salmon Policy implementation plan includes measures to restore and maintain salmon stocks, and will be implemented in collaboration with experts, stakeholders and Indigenous peoples.
Government's narrative on progress
In August 2016 and September 2018, the government released its first and second formal responses to the final report of the Cohen Commission. The government provided a third and final status update in October 2018 showing that all 75 recommendations from the Cohen Commission had been acted on. The government continues to engage with scientific experts and stakeholders to further act on many of the Commission’s recommendations. After extensive engagement with Indigenous peoples, stakeholders and the general public, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard released the Wild Salmon Policy 2018-2022 Implementation Plan (WSP IP) in October 2018, along with the 2018 Cohen Response Status Update. The WSP IP sets out how the government is working to restore and maintain salmon stock, and highlights measures for sustainable aquaculture.
