Encourage more new Canadians to settle and succeed in rural communities in Canada.
What success looks like
Rural communities are equipped to help newcomers settle and contribute to enhanced economic, social and demographic vitality.
Government's narrative on progress
In January 2019, the government announced the creation of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot. The pilot will take a community-driven approach to attract, integrate and retain newcomers who will contribute to the diverse economic development and labour needs of rural areas. Through an open application process, a small number of communities will be selected in spring 2019 and are expected to begin recruiting newcomers as early as summer 2019. The pilot will build new partnerships and enhance support systems to ensure successful integration of newcomers and their families.
