Create two centres of excellence in Veterans' care, including one specialized in mental health and post-traumatic stress disorder.
What success looks like
Veterans and their caregivers and providers have better access to better knowledge and expertise to address the unique care needs of someone who previously served.
Government's narrative on progress
Budget 2017 announced the creation of the first Centre of Excellence, which focuses on the creation and dissemination of knowledge on the prevention, the assessment and the treatment of PTSD and related mental health conditions for Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members. Budget 2019 announced the creation of a second Centre of Excellence on Chronic Pain Research. Working closely with veterans, partners and experts in the field, the Centre will help ensure that veterans’ chronic pain realities are reflected in research on chronic pain treatment as well as help pilot innovative therapies and enhance treatment options. To support the centre, Budget 2019 provides $20.1 million over five years, starting in 2019–20, with $5 million per year ongoing.
