What is an MP?
Canada has 343 Members of Parliament. Each one represents a specific geographic area called a riding (or electoral district). Whoever gets the most votes in that riding in an election wins the seat — even without a majority.
Their job:
- Vote on bills (proposed laws) in the House of Commons
- Ask the government questions during Question Period
- Represent the concerns of people in their riding
- Sit on committees that examine specific issues in detail
How they get there: A federal election happens at most every 4 years (sometimes sooner if the government loses a confidence vote). Each party runs a candidate in each riding. The party that wins the most seats forms the government, and their leader becomes Prime Minister. Want to know more about the parties? See the parties page →
